Stuart Bingham Banned from Snooker for 6 Months

One of Snooker’s big names was last week banned for 6 months for breaking betting rules by placing bets on snooker games. Stuart Bingham has since denied placing any bets on matches involving himself. However, the WPBSA (World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association) claim Bingham has placed bets on games in which he was involved.

Who is Stuart Bingham?

Stuart Bingham is a professional snooker player who won the 2015 World Championship. He is currently ranked number 4 in the world, although this is certain to drop in his absence from the game over the coming months.

It’s obviously against the rules to bet on the sport if you’re playing professionally. According to the WPBSA, Bingham has placed £35,771 in bets over the past 7 years on snooker games. This includes bets on himself. He must pay back a total of £20,000 in costs to the association.

The WPBSA said they don’t think Bingham had tried to ‘influence matches or engage in any corrupt activity.’

The WPBSA chairman, Jason Ferguson said:

‘It is very disappointing to see such a high profile player fall foul of the WPBSA betting rules.

Stuart is a great competitor and I have no doubt he has always played to the best of his ability. This case shows that there are no exceptions to the rules.

Players must understand that they cannot bet on snooker at all, even if they are not involved in a match or event. Any player found to breach the betting rules will face the most serious of consequences.’

Bingham has admitted to placing bets on snooker matches and said it was a case of him ‘not being clear on the rules.’

He went on to say:

‘I did not know I was not allowed to bet on other players’ matches. I thought it was just my own I could not bet on, and I have never done that.’

Matched Betting on Snooker

As we often say, we can place our matched bets on literally any sport or event we fancy. As long as there is a lay market at a betting exchange we can place our back and lay bets and make a guaranteed profit using matched betting.

Snooker is one of these sports we can use, although there are usually fewer events for us to pick from. However, when the Snooker World Championships or other international events are on, there will definitely be more markets available for us.

That’s it for today’s article. I would love to hear any comments you have so feel free to write add them below.
