McGregor vs Mayweather Superfight

On Saturday 26th of August, two of the fighting worlds biggest celebrities will collide in the ring. Floyd Mayweather, the undefeated great boxer will face Conor McGregor, the mixed martial arts UFC star who has never taken part in a professional boxing fight.

Where and When?

The superfight is taking place in Las Vegas at the T-Mobile Arena. It is on the evening of the 26th of August. At the time of writing, the time of the fight has not been announced, however we know that the fight will take place in the early hours of Sunday the 27th, UK time. The two fighters will probably not enter the ring before 04:00 BST.

The Fighters

Floyd Mayweather
Mayweather has had a long and successful history as a boxer. His record as a professional currently stands at 49-0 with 26 of these being KO’s. Coming out of retirement Mayweather is looking to attain a perfect 50-0 record. We expect him to to play the long game with the majority of his recent wins coming from points decisions.

Conor McGregor
McGregor is 14 years younger than Mayweather. His record in MMA is 21-3, with 18 of his wins coming from KO’s. He became the first fighter in UFC history to hold titles in two weight divisions at the same time. However, he has never taken part in a professional boxing bout. He’ll be aiming to knockout Mayweather as early as possible, within the first four rounds if he sticks to his word.

McGregor, who was still on benefits only 4 years ago, has a lot to learn before the fight, swapping discipline from MMA to Professional Boxing. In this fight he will have to sacrifice a huge amount of his skill set as forearm smashes, elbows, grappling and kicking are all banned. In the contract it states that McGregor will face a lawsuit if he even swings his leg at Mayweather.

The Odds

Since the fight was confirmed, the odds have been heavily in Mayweather’s favour. The bookies deciding that with McGregor’s lack of boxing experience he has a very slim chance of defeating Mayweather. However, McGregor’s odds have recovered slightly since the fight was announced. The bookies opening at 11-1 (12.0) and now at around 4-1 (5.0).

How Can you Watch it?

In the UK the fight will be aired live on Sky Sports Box Office. It will cost £19.95 for UK viewers and €24.95 for viewers in Ireland although McGregor had requested that the fight cost a staggering £100 for British viewers. This then means that the record for pay-per-view in the UK stays at £24.95, for the Mayweather Pacquiao fight 2 years ago. In America the fight will cost a lot more, $99.99 (£77.60) to watch in HD on pay-per-view.

Predictions

It’s hard to find an expert who is actually backing McGregor to win the fight. All time legend Mike Tyson believes ‘dumb’ McGregor will be ‘killed’ when he enters the ring. Having said that, McGregor has always achieved what he sets out to do. Maybe he will surprise us all.
