Matched Betting and the Oscars 2018 – How you can profit

It’s award season yet again and that only means one thing. With one of the world’s most anticipated and largest television and film awards just around the corner, it’s time to start placing our matched bets. The Oscars take place on 4th March in the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and this year marks the 90th academy awards.

Anticipation for this year’s Oscars is at a record high.

Last year the awards were hampered by the huge mix up with the ‘best picture’ award. La La Land won the best picture. No wait… did they? No, Moonlight won!

In addition to this, since last year, the whole film and entertainment industry has been hit hard with scandals dating back decades.

Jimmy Kimmel, who was last year’s host, is back again for the 2018 edition of the Oscars. Earlier this year he said:

‘I think there are certain groups of people who think I shouldn’t make any jokes about that situation. And there are groups of people who will be mad if I don’t make jokes about that situation. So you just kind of have to figure it out. Whatever I do will be criticised by someone. Like, ‘You didn’t make enough jokes about Harvey Weinstein.’

I’m sure it will be an awesome event and there’s bound to be some controversy…

Time’s Up.

This leads on to the hugely powerful and talked about Time’s Up movement which has been dominant in this year’s awards season. The Time’s Up movement was established on January 1st 2018 and signed by a large group of women in the entertainment industry. The movement stands against sexual assault, harassment and inequality in the workplace – just in Hollywood but in workplaces all over the world.

We have seen some of the most powerful and influential women speaking up about sexual harassment after the news of Harvey Weinstein. The likes of Oprah Winfrey gave highly emotional and influential speeches. At this year’s Golden Globes award ceremony, Oprah shed an incredible amount of light on issues that have previously been swept under the carpet.

Oprah said:

‘I think that wearing black in solidarity is one step. I think that what Time’s Up is doing with a legal defence fund is a major step. It is very important to all of us involved with Time’s Up that it is not just about the women of Hollywood because we’re already a privileged group, but to extend to the women of the world.’

The Time’s Up movement has made this award season one of the most talked about in award season history. Just a couple of nights ago at the BRIT awards in London, we saw the biggest names in the entertainment industry wearing or holding white roses together in solidarity against sexual harassment.

This string of events has generated even more publicity for the ceremonies and in particular the Oscars.

Oscars nominees

So down to main event. Who are the nominees for the best picture award?

Best picture

Oscars betting odds

It seems to be a two horse race for ‘best picture’ with The Shape of Water and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri battling it out for the award. Here are some betting odds for the top three films:

Bet365

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri – 1.83
The Shape of Water – 2.25
Lady Bird – 13.00

Ladbrokes

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri – 2.00
The Shape of Water – 2.50
Lady Bird – 11.00

Coral

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri – 2.00
The Shape of Water – 2.50
Lady Bird – 11.00

As we mentioned earlier, certainly looks like a two horse race. It would take something special from another picture to steal the top spot. Although after last year’s antics, who knows what will happen.

Matched betting and the Oscars

Matched bettors are always on the lookout for great markets to place our matched bets. The more markets available, the more likely we can find a tight match between back and lay odds. This is the key to maximising your profit with matched betting.

Currently, the lay odds for ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ are 1.97 at Smarkets. Compare this to the odds above and you’ve got some great matched betting markets available. Looking at Ladbrokes in particular, the back odds are actually higher than the lay odds. This is a perfect market to place our matched bets, as we’ll lose no money placing our qualifying bets.
