Bookies Predict Ashes Outcome – Who’s The Money On?

England began their defence of the Ashes earlier today with Australia striving to claim only their 2nd win in the last 6 Ashes tests. It’s fair to say that over the past few years, England have had the edge over the Aussies. However, the last tour down under was not so successful for the English. We were whitewashed 5-0!

At the time of writing England are 163-4 in the first test in Brisbane. We’ve lost a number of our star batsman already. A great start for Australia.

Having lived in Australia for a year, I understand the country’s infinite passion for Sport and specifically beating the English! There is no better rivalry than the one between the two countries and The Ashes epitomises this.

Unfortunately for us Brits, the Australians are clear favourites to win the 2017 Ashes. Don’t let this put you off though. England have been backed by a number of pundits and have proved predictions wrong in the past. It’s a sure bet they’ll be out to do the same on this tour.

The Ashes is one of the most popular events for Australians to bet on. Rick Wallace from Tabcorp, an Australian betting company, predicts the company will take as much as they did for the McGregor vs Mayweather fight.

He said:

‘It’s one of the biggest events on our sporting calendar both from a betting and interest point of view.

We are expecting to hold around the $5 million mark for the Ashes series. In context, this is approximately the same hold as what we had for the McGregor v Mayweather fight a few months ago.

While the Aussies are favourites, England certainly are in with a chance. There remains uncertainty around Australia’s line up, and while we expect plenty of patriotic money for Australia, there will no doubt also be support for England.’

2017 Ashes Predictions

Here is what Graeme Swann said ahead of the tour:

I don’t think this Australia team are as good as they are trying to make themselves out to be, and England are stronger than we have been led to believe. I don’t know where, why, or when, but I do think England will win the series.

His prediction: Australia 1-2 England

Overall there are mixed feelings on how England and Australia are going to perform as The Ashes kicks off. We’ll have a much better feel for the direction of the tour during and after the first test in Brisbane.

According to the bookies, the Australians are more likely to win. Here are the current odds at Bet365 for the outright winner market:

Australia: 2/5 (1.4)
England: 10/3 (4.33)
Draw: 8/1 (9.0)
